Weekend Update

I could just name every post Weekend Update like on Saturday Night Live. 

Looking back at the calendar – not a lot went on this week.  Well, besides the usual, normal stuff.  Tuesday we had gymnastics and Thursday the kids had choir practice.  Will’s soccer practice Friday got cancelled because of a thunderstorm.  I’m not sure he was all that upset.  Drew had taken the kids out for a little while that afternoon and he was having fun and didn’t want to come home to get ready for soccer. 

Saturday we had another home Wake Forest football game and it was raining again.  We’ve had 4 home games in September and 3 of them have been raining.  Bob and Suzette came to our house before the game and Suzette offered to stay home with the kids.  I felt bad she missed the game but she said she didn’t want to sit out in the rain and it was so much easier to not have to worry about the kids.  I’ve always loved Suzette but I really loved her yesterday Drew, Bob and I headed to the game.  We sat in the rain for most of the game and Wake lost to Duke.  Bad afternoon.  We had originally had plans to go to the Dixie Classic Fair with Anna and Brian but those got scraped with the weather forecast.  Instead they just came over to our house and we had dinner and watched football.  It was nice to see them. 

Today we had church and then I went to a funeral.  The lady who passed away, Rhonda, is the sister of our great friend and the kids’ Stokes County grandmother, Janice.  I went to the funeral and then Drew and the kids came to the visitation afterwards.  We saw a few of our old church members, which was nice.  When I told the kids we were going to see Janice today because she was sad and I explained why she was sad,  Lindy said, “We have to make Janice happy.”   We talked about Janice being sad and missing her sister and Will said – with honest to goodness tears in his eyes – “I know Rhonda is sad because she can’t visit Janice anymore too.”  He has such a sensitive little soul for a 5 year old kid. 

On a lighter note – Lindy cracked us up this week with her singing.  There is a vacation bible school song where the chorus is “He Arose. He Arose.  Hallelujah , Christ Arose.”  I had been singing it one afternoon and then Lindy got it stuck in her head and was singing it all that evening.  Except Lindy was singing, “He Arose.  He Arose.  Happy New Year, Christ Arose.”  It was so funny.  I never had the heart to correct her.  Will and Drew know every word to every song.  Will has been known to correct me.  Lindy is like me.   We sing but our words are probably not all right! 

Along with this boring week and post, here are the few pictures I took this week.  Apparently I was too busy to take pictures – I just don’t remember what I was busy doing.

Lou looking cute one day before school.We had Grandbob’s corn hole boards for the week and we played outside a couple afternoons and practiced our throws.Today before church.  We had been practicing on doing ‘pretty smiles.’  No more ‘cheese’ while taking pictures.  It’s slow going but I think we are making progress.The kids made a replica of the world today in children’s church. They have been learning that God created everything in the world and they made these really cool worlds today.  They had a blast and of course Lindy got her hair all in it and required an extra bath tonight.

Sickly Week

So the kids seemed to be getting colds last weekend when I wrote.  Lindy had a fever on Sunday evening so I kept her home from school – even though the fever broke in the middle of the night.  On Sunday she mostly just had a runny nose but Monday she was coughing some.  She acted completely normal but I didn’t want her coughing all over everyone.  She seemed to play fine all morning so I did go ahead and take her to physical therapy in the afternoon.  She was warned about playing around and she did do better this time.   Monday evening I had a meeting at the hospital that I went to.

Tuesday I sent her to school and we went to gymnastics.  She was coughing some but was still acting fine. 

Wednesday morning she woke up coughing a bunch.  She was already dressed and ready to go to school and we made a last minute decision to get her a doctor’s appointment.  Her bout of pneumonia and her hospital stay in the spring scared us.  Last spring it started as a cold and went into pneumonia.  Life with Lindy has been identified as BP – before pneumonia, and AP – after pneumonia.  We’re going to take colds and coughs a little more seriously and be a lot more proactive so she does not end up in the hospital again.  It was no fun and it was expensive!!  We headed to school and dropped Will off and then we went to her appointment.  They said she did sounded junky and that she had some bronchitis.  They put her on an antibiotic and told me to give her mucinex.  I’ve continued her allergy medicine too so she is getting some nice cocktails these days.  I was afraid it would be a waste of time and money but I guess it was worth it.  She still hasn’t acted sick but her coughs sound bad. 

Wednesday morning was a hopping morning.  I was trying to get an appointment for Lindy and reschedule another appointment she was supposed to have that afternoon all while the kids were eating breakfast.  We look over and Will’s nose is bleeding all over his face.  We get that stopped, or so we thought – but after he got out of his chair it started up two more times.  We were late to school that morning because so much was going on.  His teacher said it started bleeding a little more during class but it was stopped easily.

Wednesday was “Talk Like a Pirate Day.”  A fun day for our pirate lovers.  This fun day was made all the better by Krispy Kreme doughnuts.  They had a deal on Wednesday if you came in and talked like a pirate you got a free doughnut.  If you came dressed like a pirate you got a free dozen doughnuts.  Lindy wasn’t too sick to dress up like a pirate that afternoon and go get some doughnuts!  We were shocked that they gave both kids a dozen doughnuts!  Not bad for free!!

Thursday both kids went to school and Will had another nose bleed during class.  His teacher said she looked at Will and blood was running down his face and onto his shirt.  He doesn’t even realize it.  Which I find odd – I think you’d feel it.  I don’t know what caused them but thankfully he hasn’t had another one since Thursday. 

Thursday afternoon we had a private vision tutor come do a session with Lindy.  It’s the first time she has ever worked with her and Lindy did great.  She is trying to figure out what Lindy can and cannot do but she said Lindy uses her vision well.  Lindy scanned I Spy books and found the items she asked for.   We are going to do monthly sessions just to keep us in touch with a vision therapist during the lapse in services from the school system.  Thursday evening Drew took the kids to choir practice.

Friday Will had soccer at 5:30pm but it didn’t go quite as well this week as last week.  They played a new game where they were foxes and the coach was the hunter.  They all had jerseys hanging out of the back of their pants and the coach would pull their tails.  Then you became a hunter with him.  I didn’t actually see it happen but apparently Will got his tail pulled and he tripped and fell all at the same time.  He came up crying so hard.  Drew thinks he was just mad about getting his tail pulled.  I don’t really know.  The coach calmed him down some and then they came for a water break.  I got him to take some deep breaths and he seemed good to go.  They did another game and at the end of the game they were supposed to pick up the cones.   Well all the other kids got the cones and Will didn’t have any cones to pick up and he started up crying again.  He was crying so hard – it was kind of strange.  I got him calmed down again and he finished the end of practice but then he got to crying so hard after practice telling us about it.  He cheered up when we told him we were going to a Wake Forest men’s soccer game with Kris, Micah, and Claire.  We had a great time at the game – even if it went into overtime and still ended in a tie.  It was a beautiful evening for a soccer game!

Saturday we had a Wake Forest football game at 12:30pm.  We had a mini birthday celebration for Bob – who turns 98 68 on Wednesday.  I made him some cupcakes and we took his birthday present.  This year all the Southern kids went in together and got him WF cornhole boards.  Sadly we didn’t really have much time to play and the kids kind of took over the game.  We’ll have to break them out next week for some real cornhole action.  I predict a real cornhole butt kicking on Bob!  Wake won their football game and it was a pretty – albeit hot – day for a game.  We left the game and headed directly to Claire’s 4th birthday party.  It was outdoors at a church playground and the kids had a blast.  They were pretty tired but still had fun.  We came home for baths and they crashed hard last night.  As did Drew and I!

Today we had church this morning and then we had an ice cream social this evening.  I made homemade mint chocolate chip ice cream and it turned out so yummy!  It’s been years since I’ve made homemade ice cream but man it was good!  Maybe we’ll make it more often! 

That wraps up our week.  Every week I think I didn’t take many pictures and then I transfer them and there are always over a 100.  I take more than I think!

“A” Week

The kids had their first full week of school and they did great and loved every minute of it.  Lindy’s highlight of the week was being the helper one day.  Will is patiently waiting for his turn.  It was A week so they learned about all things A.  Ants, apples, alligators.  They had to bring in an item that started with A for show and tell and they both chose automobiles.  It’s going to be fun some weeks finding two items that begin with certain letters!

As for out of school activities, they had gymnastics on Tuesday and Lindy again did well.  Being a little older and having a year under her belt is making a huge difference!

Wednesday evening we started private hearing therapy with Lindy’s teacher from last year, Ms. Asbury.  We hadn’t seen her all summer so it was great to see her.  Lindy was so excited and had tons to tell her.  There have been big changes to the hearing impaired preschool class Lindy was in (like changing schools and going to an all day class) and it was interesting to hear about all of it.  We tried to get her up to date on where Lindy is after the summer.  We worked on Lindy listening to a small story and answering questions and then having her repeat the sentence we said.  We also played Simon Says which is a great hearing therapy game!  By holding Lindy back a year, we lost all her therapy services.  I think Lindy will do fine this year but I’m glad we will still be meeting once a month with her old teacher.  She can keep up with her progress and give me things to work on during the month.

Thursday morning I had a meeting at church and then the kids had choir practice at church that evening. 

Friday Will had his first soccer practice.  He is playing in a developmental type program where they just learn skills, not actually play games.  They played a bunch of games and looked like they were having a lot of fun while getting comfortable with the ball and learning how to dribble a ball.  Funny story – when Coach Dan first told them to dribble the ball Will picked up his soccer ball and started dribbling it like a basketball.  ha ha!  He looked up and noticed everyone else kicking it so he started kicking his too.  Claire is on his team and another little boy from our preschool is on his team.  Uncle Ed, Aunt Jamie, and Molly all came to watch him.  Molly kept Lindy busy the whole time and I don’t think she even realized Will was out there playing soccer!  After soccer we went for a quick piece of pizza - where we saw Lindy’s teacher Ms. Sue.  They were so excited to see her.  Lindy said, “I can’t believe Ms. Sue came to see me!”  ha ha.  After eating dinner we headed to the Wake Forest field hockey game.  I played field hockey in middle school and loved it.  I really enjoy the WF games.  At one time they won the national championship 3 years in a row.  They were so good for awhile there.  They haven’t done as well in recent years but are ranked #13 right now. 

Saturday morning we headed to the Apple Festival at a local historical park in town.  It was a really nice morning to be out.  They had music, old timey exhibits, apple food and the crowd favorite – pig races.   We enjoyed our first Apple Festival and I imagine we will make it back next year!  We came home to watch the Wake football game but we should have just stayed at the apple festival.  It was bad.  Very, very bad.

Today has been rainy and really chilly.  And the kids have colds.  9 days of school and we have our first colds.  Their noses started running last night and they are going strong today.  They were feeling okay so we headed to church because they had their first singing performance with the children’s choir.  Lindy is a diva who thinks she needs a microphone.  Besides having to run to get milk this afternoon, it’s been a good day to be lazy inside – with a box of tissues.
